Zodiac Series

For the past 18 years, Austin has created an original Lunar New Year artwork annually — one for each zodiac year — as a personal ritual and offering.

Each piece begins in study and devotion: research into cultural traditions, studies and observation of the zodiac animal, and meditation on the emotional undercurrents of the year ahead. From this process, emerges the annual design: a rich modern cultural artifact, rooted in intention, symbolism, and care, all distilled into a deceptively simple form.

Over time, the practice has expanded. What began as an act for family friends has grown into more formats (digital works, essays, and more), and a body of work with devoted collectors.

Each year brings a collection of “art” in different formats.

The Year of the Snake brought:

  • 4 handmade mixed media pieces, made using watercolor stamped through a handcut stencil, oil pastel, and gold foil

  • an accompanying artist statement

  • a digital design

  • a limited run of gold foil prints

  • an essay on "the principles of the Year of the Snake"
