about
bio
Austin Lan is a Taiwanese American artist based in Miami. She studied Fine Art at Yale University, building a foundation in technique, experimentation, and collaborative practice, which led her to create work addressing mental health and the human figure. After several years working as a Director in design and technology, she has returned fully to her studio practice, producing work that plays with realism layered with memory, perception, and fantasy.
Her practice draws on her Taiwanese heritage, spirituality, and vivid dreamlike imagery. Through her art, she invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship with personal power and the mystical.
practice statement
My work explores the gap between who we are and who we wish to be, confronting personal power, spirituality, and stillness. I begin with realism, often the human figure, layering it with dreamlike imagery to create scenes that feel both familiar and enchanted. My work embraces the unpredictability of watercolor—a reflection on control and surrender—and celebrates the feminine self: sensuality, vulnerability, self-possession, and quiet strength. I’m actively involved in local figure drawing groups, refining my practice and integrating play with other artists.
Shaped by my Taiwanese heritage and Miami’s vivid color, light, and relationship to water, I invite viewers to celebrate transformation, empowerment, and the quiet magic of becoming more fully alive.
about my signature
I often get questions about the seal I use to sign my work (I do have a handwritten signature as well). This stamp was made for me by a local shop in Taiwan, on the street where my grandfather lives. It features my Chinese name: 藍天璇 which roughly translates to Blue Sky Jade.
These seals are still used across Taiwan and mainland China for a wide variety of purposes, including signing contracts, conducting business, authorizing bank transactions.
